Abstract

The first chapter elaborates on the motivation for the study and frames the direction of the volume. It introduces the reader to the relevance of examining the transmission of output shocks via the trade channel for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), a highly integrated trade region. In examining the response of ASEAN to output shocks from China relative to other extra-regional trade partners (Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand and India), the chapter forwards the different mechanisms of the trade channel that the volume considers in ensuring a complete assessment of the transmission of output shocks to ASEAN, namely the origin of the shock (direct and indirect); the composition of trade flows (intermediate goods and consumption goods); and the dynamic shifts in trade linkages.
