Abstract

Zusammenfassung Man kann nicht genau sagen, von wann bis wann das Mittelalter dauerte. Im Germanischen Nationalmuseum geht es mit den Langobarden los und damit Mitte des 6. Jahrhunderts, als sie Italien eroberten und katholisch wurden. Erschwerend kommt noch hinzu, dass mittelalterliche Quellen oft unklar sind. So gibt es in der Ausstellung ein Glasgemälde, das entweder Karl den Großen oder König Stephan von Ungarn zeigt, wie der Begleittext etwas ratlos feststellt. Ansonsten sah das Mittelalter den Aufstieg der Städte zu echten Machtfaktoren und einen Reliquienhandel mit Splittern des Kreuzes Jesus, der so außer Kontrolle geriet, dass die katholische Kirche dagegen vorging. In jener Zeit erlebte auch der Kirchenbau eine Blütezeit und die entstehende Bürgerschaft drang in immer mehr Machtbereiche vor, die bis dahin zwischen Klerus und Ade aufgeteilt waren.
