Abstract

The People’s Republic of China is struggling with numerous environmental problems. Air pollution in particular attracts a great deal of national and international attention. For this reason, environmental issues have become a top priority for the Chinese government and several laws and measures have been enacted. In addition, water resources in China are scarce. One consideration to meet the increasing demand has been to divert rivers from the Himalayan Mountains toward Beijing. However, implementation is proving difficult, so China prefers alternatives. In addition, lack of waste disposal and inadequate waste treatment exacerbates the environmental situation. The Chinese government has begun to address this problem, for example by announcing a ban on plastic imports. Finally, environmental policy is extremely important for China’s future, because a better environment contributes to a sustainable model of economic growth.
