Abstract

Zusammenfassung Mittelständische Unternehmen weisen für die deutsche Volkswirtschaft eine besondere, weil höhere Bedeutung als in anderen entwickelten Volkswirtschaften der Erde auf. In der Vergangenheit wurden Aspekte des Controllings aus Großunternehmen meist 1:1 für mittelständische Unternehmen herunterskaliert. Dies ist jedoch aus zwei Gründen abzulehnen. Erstens entspricht die Konzentration auf eine quantitative, d. h. kleinere Größenklasse einer Verkürzung des Mittelstandsbegriffs. Der Mittelstand zeichnet sich neben einer mittleren (d. h. nicht kleinen, aber auch nicht großen) Größe durch andere, qualitative Faktoren aus. Zweitens hat dies Konsequenzen für die anwendbaren Controlling-Konzepte. Mittelständische Lösungen sind nicht pauschal kleiner oder weniger komplex, sondern sollten an die jeweiligen Bedürfnisse der mittelständischen Entscheider angepasst werden. Im vorliegenden Beitrag werden theoretische und empirische Besonderheiten des Controllings im Mittelstand diskutiert.
