Abstract

In this final chapter of the book, we want to address how the various elements of corporate strategy that we introduced in the preceding chapters can be integrated into a coherent process of corporate strategy development. What is the right sequence of steps? Who should participate? What are typical pitfalls that should be avoided? We will describe a project-based approach, organized as a series of workshops with the senior management team, that we have seen working well for many different kinds of companies. In most cases, a corporate-level strategy function and its head, the chief strategy officer (CSO), are key players in the corporate strategy process. We will introduce alternative roles for such a function and discuss how it can effectively interact with the business units and other corporate functions. And finally, we will address the annual corporate strategic planning process and its contribution to implementing and perpetuating corporate strategy and to ensuring its long-term success.
