What’s behind “inflation perceptions”? A survey-based analysis of Italian consumers

Abstract

A number of papers have investigated the possible explanations for the sharp rise recorded by inflation perceptions in the aftermath of the euro cash changeover. Del Giovane and Sabbatini (2006 and Chap. 1) examine this issue for the case of Italy, showing that the surge of perceptions can be mostly explained by the combination between the mechanisms underlying their formation and the observed behaviour of prices and other economic variables in the post-changeover period, together with exceptional media coverage of the issue and possibly inaccurate recall of past prices.
