Abstract

Part VII of this book is one of five interviews with oil company executives working in Cuba between 2016 and 2021. Together, these conversations provide insight into one of the country’s priority sectors, oil and energy. This chapter comprises an interview with Kong Xiangzhong, the Chief Representative of China’s Greatwall Drilling Company. The interview took place at the offices of Greatwall Drilling at the Miramar Trade Center complex in Havana in December 2019, after the last CUPET Energy Oil and Gas Conference (CEOG). It was just before the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. This conversation examines the history of Greatwall Drilling on the Island, its partnerships, and projects. The interview covers the potential for oil in Cuba and recent findings. Mr. Kong also discussed his experiences working in Cuba.
