Abstract

Challenging India’s Socialist Mindset. I grew up in a socialist India and in a state with alcohol prohibition. I finally asked the question: Why do so many people die almost daily due to the consumption of spurious alcohol? It started a journey buttressed by the works of Ayn Rand and Milton Friedman, leading to a Ph.D. in economics in the US and the founding of the Centre for Civil Society and the Indian School of Public Policy in New Delhi, India. The Mises Institute and Earhart and Atlas foundations played a critical role. The work focused on making the markets work for the poor through campaigns on livelihood freedom, school choice, and school vouchers and support for budget/affordable private schools.
