Abstract

This chapter focuses on new theoretical constructions that can lead to a more sustainable future, that is aQuadruple helix Quadruple/Quintuple HelixQuintuple helix approachApproaches to innovationInnovation and Industry 5.0Industry 5.0 and Society 5.0Society 5.0. We see them as a framework integrating and including all the relevant actors of the innovationInnovation ecosystemsEcosystem and realms of democratic valuesValues in their core. Definitively, there is a need for a new interdisciplinary researchResearch between scienceScience and engineeringEngineering with the aim of developing a perfect human-technology collaboration in Industry 5.0Industry 5.0. In addition to this, it is necessary to develop and conduct a multi-level analysis of the future universityUniversity model 5.0. A smart University 5.0Smart university 5.0 mustUniversity 5.0 understand and update the situation inside and outside its boundaries, with a broad perspective of intra-organizational and inter-organizational cooperation. We therefore concentrate on theoretical views and considerations with some practical implicationsImplications of the aforementioned researchResearch concepts and their potential to build a new system of innovationInnovation that promotes in a systemic way the open, “glocalGlocal”, socialSocial and digitalDigital social innovationsSocial innovation for the benefit of people with a key role of scienceScience and its social and societal impact. The concept of UniversityUniversity 5.0 and Education 5.0Education 5.0 is an attempt to address present ongoing digitalDigital transformationDigital transformation and green transitions, and to stimulate the socialSocial dimension of universities’ missions. In a single universityUniversity perspective, a micro level would concern the optimization of researchResearch and innovationInnovation processesInnovation processes. At a meso level, we can assume an analysis of the innovationInnovation ecosystemEcosystem in which the universityUniversity is located, also including the territorial peculiarities within which cooperative synergies would be developed. Lastly, a macro analysis (completely external agents, such as political, economic, demographic, sociocultural conditions, legalLegal aspects, technology, etc.) can be implemented to support innovationInnovation growth based on new routes of a universityUniversity fully declined? In terms of 5.0 version (Carayannis et al. in J Knowl Econ 13:2272–2301, 2022). This multi-level path is still very relevant to the condition of industry 4.0Industry 4.0 towards Industry 5.0Industry 5.0/Society 5.0Society 5.0. Starting with a clear vision and mission statement, then translated into strategies and operational plans, can ensure the sustainability of the entire ecosystemsEcosystem of innovationInnovation, by taking into account all the EthicalEthical, LegalLegal, and SocialSocial ImplicationsImplications (ELSIEthical Legal and Social Implications (ELSI)) involved. Again, given the importance of the socialSocial aspects related to the concept of Industry 5.0Industry 5.0, Zhang et al. (IEEE Trans Comput Soc Syst 5:829–840, 2018) proposed a paradigm shift from cyber-physical systems (CPS) toCyber-Physical Systems (CPS) cyber-physical-social systems (CPSSCyber-Physical-Social Systems (CPSS)). The application of the (eco)logics orbiting around the quintuple helixQuintuple helix innovationInnovation model (Carayannis and Campbell in Int J Technol Manag 46:201–234, 2009; Carayannis and Campbell in Int J Soc Ecol Sustain Dev 1:45–69, 2010a; Carayannis and Campbell in J Knowl Econ, 2010b) can ensure the continuous interaction of the five dimensions involved: (1) Industry, (2) Government, (3) UniversityUniversity (4) SocietySociety and (5) Natural EnvironmentEnvironment, going towards an innovationInnovation eco-system design based on a truly humanHumans centered “evergetical” 5.0 paradigm (furthermore, see also Carayannis and Campbell in Innovation systems in smart quintuple helix innovation systems. Springer, Cham, 2019).
