Abstract

Purpose: The objective of this study is to empirically determine the relative significance of the determinant factors for sustainable regional and trans-border infrastructure of road, rail and seaborne transport, based on the social, environmental and economic dimensions of sustainability. Design/Methodology/Approach: A theoretical framework was developed from a mingle of the social, environmental and economic pillars of sustainable development, and the best-worst method was used to scrutinize and rank the identified determinant factors according to their weighted averages. Findings: The findings of this study point to access, equity and fairness; health; cost and speed; reliability; and carbon dioxide/air emissions as the highest ranked determinant factors for sustainable regional and trans-border infrastructure of road, rail and seaborne transport. Implications/Research Limitation: This study has significant implications for academic and organisational research and literature, and it can broaden conceptual viewpoints of implications of decisions made to adopt sustainable regional and trans-border infrastructure of road, rail and seaborne transport. However, it is limited to an extent, because it was partly founded on the opinions of transport and logistics managers in Ghana, which may be branded with biased judgment and ambiguity. Practical Implication: In addition to its theoretical value, this study has significant implications for policy makers and practitioners, as it would expand their perspectives on choices to implement sustainable regional and trans-border infrastructure of road, rail and seaborne transport. Originality/Value: This distinctive study forges an estimation of the most sustainable regional and trans-border infrastructure between road, rail and seaborne transport, and accentuates a critical research area that is currently understudied, using a unique framework and a different technique.
