Abstract

This chapter analyses productivity in the Goods Producing Industries in Jamaica. The industries include Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing, Manufacture, Construction and Mining and Quarrying. The chapter identifies the level of labour that produces the maximum output as optimal and renders labour hired above this level as excess labour that could be employed elsewhere. The excess productivity and excess output that could be gained from each industry are estimated. The results suggest that all the goods producing industries outside of Agriculture are employing more labour than optimal at the current capacity and as a result, the productivity level per person is lower than it ought to be. The chapter sheds light on how each industry can improve over the medium to long term.
