Abstract

In principle, a gas supply boycott against Western countries by Russia is not very different from an EU gas import embargo from an economic point of view. However, the motivational situation for natural gas is fundamentally more positive in the case of Russian supplies to Western countries than, for example, in the case of oil from Russia, which from Russia’s point of view could be more easily diverted to other markets—for example, in Asia. Gas supply restrictions on the part of Russia can be specifically directed against individual EU countries; this means that gas supply stops are a political weapon in the economic war with the West from a Russian point of view. However, by restricting gas supplies to the West, Russia loses political credibility, since gas supplies were reliably exported by Russia even during the Cold War. In addition, a reduction in natural gas exports reduces Russia’s government revenues.
