Abstract

We review the current state of research on short sales, including the information content in short interest, information advantages of short sellers, and firms’ reactions to the short-selling threat. We also discuss the data and metrics commonly used in short selling studies and summarize important empirical findings. Finally, we suggest several future directions to improve our understanding of the role of short sellers in capital market development and in influencing corporate decisions.
