Abstract

The operating environment for tourism continues to evolve in the increasingly crisis prone global tourism space. Destinations the world over are engaged in an ongoing exercise to effectively build resilient tourism systems to ensure survival first and then increased competitiveness in the face of continuous shocks to the system. The chapters in this book ask the question, how is tourism resilience understood and practised in Caribbean SIDS and what are the factors that inform, undermine or indeed redefine the sustainable resilience agenda for these territories? It also presents strategic considerations to public and private sector practitioners in implementing measures to strengthen the competitive positioning of their destinations as they contend with the dynamism of the external and internal environments. This opening chapter presents the background to the book as well as a summary of the chapters.
