Abstract

The first word that comes to most people’s minds when they think about economics is “money”. That word carries several connotations that describe well the bulk of cinema with an explicit economic content. One connotation would be “boring”. Another is “attractive”, which is why many films about economics have displayed a fascination with the opulence and luxury we tend to associate with the world of finance. A third idea often linked with money is a lack of ethics—greed, selfishness—another pervasive theme in economics films. This chapter reviews how cinema has represented money and the consequences of its evolution from a physical object with intrinsic value to an abstract and intangible asset.
