Abstract

Movies can help us see the relevance of economic principles in our daily lives. But there is more than that to the relationship between economics and film. Cinema plays a vital role in shaping people’s views on many economic issues. Films articulate the economic anxieties and views of each generation of filmmakers and audiences. It is possible to characterize a genre of “economic films” where economic life is at the center of the plot, where the economy is the stage on which the characters move, and the action unfolds. These are fictions in which work, speculation, fraud, scarcity, and ambition play an essential role. Through their characters and stories, economic films explore the consequences of economic policies and phenomena.
