Globalization and the Interdependence of Small Economies

Abstract

Facts rarely, if ever, stand alone. Journalists must add the context that gives the facts meaning. Even the biggest events are rarely so big that journalists don’t have to start explaining immediately to their audience what their significance is. When countries elect new leaders, when countries go to war, or when major policies are adopted, journalists have to report the fact along with the explanation—that is, the global or local impact of such an event. Where business and economic news is concerned, this context often has to do with activity in neighboring economies. Reporting on these economies is the focus of this chapter.
