Abstract

Over the past 30 years, sustainable development has become the central term worldwide in discussions about the future development of humanity and planet Earth. The struggle to define what sustainable development really means and how to achieve it, has become a central theme of national and international politics, science, and increasingly also of business and civil society. But why has the concept of sustainable development become central to many disparate debates across the world? In this chapter we discuss the biggest social and environmental challenges facing the world today and the basic processes, causes, and effects of climate change.
