Abstract

During the first decade of the twenty-first century, fresh asparagus exports led the development of the fresh fruit and vegetable (FFV) export industry in Peru. While the preserved asparagus export stagnated in the 1990s, fresh asparagus export increased significantly in the 2000s. By focusing on the differences in the structure of respective value chains, this chapter analyzes the expansion of fresh asparagus export from Peru. The focus of attention is on the emergence of agribusiness companies that entered the FFV export industry by establishing large-scale corporate farms, investing in new production technologies, and integrating, from input procurement to export sales. This strategy allowed them to respond to international markets’ demand for high-quality fresh produce. Particularly by integrating the value chain, agribusiness companies improved efficiency and value-added, thus achieving process, product, and functional upgrades in the chain.
