Abstract

Despite the slowdown of Latin American economies following the end of the commodity boom, exports of fresh fruits and vegetables (FFVs) from the region are increasing. Although FFV export is food export, it differs from the traditional agricultural export of the Prebisch–Singer hypothesis. FFVs are high-value exports, and demand in the international market is increasing. Further development of the FFV export industry would advance the economic growth of the region. This book analyzes the development of the FFV export industry in Peru from the perspective of industrial development led by domestic actors. This chapter explains optimism in FFV export in the historical context of economic development in Latin America and existing studies on the FFV export industry. Furthermore, this chapter presents the theoretical frameworks applied in the book, which include integration and upgrades in value chains, business strategies to overcome fluctuations in agriculture, and cluster development based on joint actions among actors in the industry.
