On the Conflict Between Equity and Efficiency

Abstract

This chapter focuses on two social desiderata—those of (Pareto) efficiency and equality. Drawing on the work of Albert Weale, it expands on a specific sense of how the two principles could conflict. It also points to the logical and ethical difficulties that arise from an attempt to circumvent the conflict by affording priority to one of the two principles.
