Abstract

South Africa has a fairly long history of business cycle measurement, with a documented chronology of business cycle phases from 1806. The measurement of South African business cycles can be divided into three distinct periods, i.e. from 1806 to 1909, from 1910 to 1948 and from 1945 to the present. For each of these periods, the reference turning points in the South African business cycle were determined by different researchers or institutions, applying different methodologies. This chapter presents the South African business cycle chronology from 1806 and briefly describes the methodology applied and the data employed in determining the reference turning points during each of the three time periods, focusing more on the most recent period. In addition, a brief discussion of cyclical and structural developments that shaped business cycle movements during each of the time periods is presented, as well as a short analysis of the business cycle characteristics during each period.
