All Around the World: Revolutionary Potential in the Age of Authoritarian Revanchism

Abstract

In an age of authoritarian revanchism, elite-stoked fears that economies require conservative policies and societies require order have resulted in austerity-security states. These states prioritize wealth preservation at the expense of popular welfare. Eric Selbin demonstrates that resistance, rebellion, and revolution are likely to be recurrent and viable responses to the end of state welfare provision and the destruction of stable employment, and to the devastation of communal bonds such as identities, social protections and sense of place. Collective action, ideology, and culture are crucial and the creation of rich revolutionary imaginaries provides people with the means and methods to struggle for control of the material and ideological conditions of their everyday lives. In the author’s opinion, a broader, deeper definition of revolution helps explore where, when, and who will bring revolution into the twenty-first Century.
