Carbon Travel Budgets (CTB): An Alternative Approach to Reduce Corporate Travel Emissions

Abstract

Current mobility accounts for a large share of global CO $$_2$$ emissions and thus contributes massively to climate change. The mobility revolution is intended to provide a remedy: On the one hand, more sustainable means of transport can be used or, on the other hand, the need for mobility can be reduced. In this article, an approach to CO $$_2$$ budgeting for companies will be presented in order to be able to save business trips. To this end, the need for such a solution is first presented and related work is examined. The insights gained are then translated into a novel approach to budgeting and demonstrated in a proof of concept. Companies can adapt the resulting approach to perform CO $$_2$$ budgeting fair to all employees. All findings and results were finally evaluated in a study with a company from a business travel-intensive industry. The overview of the budget creates transparency and can motivate employees to design more sustainable mobility.
