Trajectory Optimization for Wire-Arc Additive Manufacturing

Abstract

We consider a technical operations research problem that arises in the wire-arc additive manufacturing process. In order to manufacture a three dimensional object, it is build layer-wise from bottom to top, where in each layer a metal wire is melted using high temperatures at a welding torch. Deadheading is allowed for the welding torch, if the shape in a certain layer cannot be drawn continuously. A thorough planning of the path is important for process time and part quality. The most critical restrictions are due to the enormous heat input to the workpiece. We describe the optimization problem of how to partition a given traverse into continuous segments that are manufactured without intersection, and deadheading between the segments, such that deadheading is minimized in order to finish the process as fast as possible. As a further constraint of the optimization, the accumulated heat is tracked and the local amount of heat should be below a given threshold. We give a formulation of this problem as a mixed-integer program and demonstrate the applicability of standard mixed-integer solvers for their solution on a test-bed of components.
