Abstract

This work seeks to elucidate the strategic logic of the Chinese economy through time and, in so doing, shed light on two major long-run questions—one absolute and one relative—that will be influential in the evolution of the world system for the remainder of the twenty-first century. The first is how plausible are China’s aspirations to ascend to high-income status and join the world-system core? The second is to consider China’s relative weight in the world system over the duration of the twenty-first century, an exercise that in many ways depends upon the first—especially where a potential hegemonic challenge is at stake.
