Abstract

The economic system is changing from an industrial-based to an idea-based system, i.e., increasingly depends on trade in ideas (IP). This changes the logic of the economy from goods → services → embedded IP to ideas (IP) → goods → services, a far more dynamic economic system where exchange in productive technology in its own rights (transfers and licensing of rights) is the key part of world trade. The functioning of this twenty-first century economic system is discussed as well as the principles for data collection to create an upgraded statistical framework needed to inform business policy and trade policy. Topics outlined in an introductory manner cover trade in ideas, integration of science and technology, a culture of creativity, contracts, strategies, and theory of value.
