Abstract

The use of geographical information systems (GIS) in physical planning activities continues to grow. One reason for this is the increasing complexity of infrastructure planning in the age of sustainability, creating demands for spatial plans to balance economic, environmental and social interests. Aside from the complexity of demands on planners, tighter economic constraints have required better data management capabilities to update, retrieve, store, integrate and manipulate spatial and non-spatial data. Rapid technological development in the GIS field has implied a need to be able to demonstrate the usefulness of the techniques not only to represent existing spatial data but also to utilise them for policy analysis. The aim of this chapter is to show how a GIS package can be used in the process of road location planning.
