Abstract

The growing diffusion of the technological/information revolution, which is already having a major impact on the economic development of many industrial sectors and services, is also penetrating the field of transport and influencing the location of urban activities. By ’transport’ we refer not only to the physical (material) network for transporting people and goods, but also the network used for the non-material ’transport’ of information and for the exchange of knowledge. The enormous increase in the quantity of information and new modes of exchange are generating changes in the economic structure, with consequent modifications in the spatial configuration of urban areas.
