Abstract

We study the geospatial distribution of traditional accommodations in the USA and the access to such accommodations. We then analyze how Airbnb home sharing has changed the tourism landscape in terms of the geographic distribution of short-term lodging and access to accommodations. Overall, Airbnb listings are more geographically widespread than traditional hotels, are twice as close as the nearest hotel to the typical resident, and are disproportionately more likely than hotels to fill the void left by their counterpart lodging-providers. The geographic spread of home sharing accommodations across the USA brings the benefits of tourism to a wider range of areas and provides proximity to accommodations for a wider set of people.
