Cameroon and China Educational Cooperation in the Post-COVID Era: The Case of Chinese Language Teaching and Learning

Abstract

Education is an important component of foreign assistance because it plays a major role in a country's development. International organisations such as UNESCO, UNICEF, OECD and the World Bank have a major influence on education policy in developing countries. Bilateral and multilateral cooperation also contributes to the development of education, especially for sub-Saharan countries such as Cameroon, which still faces many challenges. China is one of Cameroon's strategic partners. Cooperation between Cameroon and China covers a wide range of areas, including economic, political, educational and socio-cultural exchanges. In the field of education, cooperation includes scholarships, short-term seminars, the mobility of researchers, etc. In addition to existing difficulties, the COVID-19 crisis has exacerbated the weakness of African countries' education systems. In Cameroon, the COVID-19 pandemic has led to the closure of schools and universities from 18 March to 31 May 2020, affecting the education of 4.5 million children in primary education, 1.8 million students in secondary education, 40,000 students in vocational training and 347,000 students in higher education. The teaching and learning of the Chinese language has also been affected. The effectiveness of educational cooperation in the post-COVID era is a serious issue, as the COVID pandemic has significantly changed educational habits. This contribution aims to analyse the development and effectiveness of Chinese language teaching and learning in the post-COVID era in Cameroon.
