Abstract

The Soviet legacy has had a major impact on the economic development of independent Ukraine through its social practices, economic dislocations and institutional inheritance (Chapter 2). In this chapter, political and bureaucratic power and its influence on the economic process is studied. First, the structure of government is described. Then, the functioning of the Ukrainian bureaucracy is analysed, as well as the nature of the state, the character of elite networks and interest representation.
