Abstract

Costa Rica is a small country located on a segment of the Central American isthmus between the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean, with a surface area of 31,758 square miles (51,100 square kilometres). Its population exceeds four million inhabitants. It is a country in full demographic transition, whose territory is organized administratively into seven provinces, 81 cantons and six planning regions.
