Between Private and Public Interests: The Moral Economy of Collaboration in Eighteenth-Century Spain

Abstract

In eighteenth-century Spain, the complex public/private dichotomy was expressed, in a particular way, in the tax farming business and in the dealings of military contractors with the state. This model was a type of collaboration with moral connotations that we could call the “moral economy of collaboration”. Normally, this morality has been approached from the perspective of the alleged abuses of private individuals; however, the policies that provided an answer to this problem were also based on concerns about the higher interests of the state in some spheres, and led to a number of unexpected results, also with the potential for being viewed from a moral standpoint.
