Corporate Social Responsibility and the Rise of the Non-profit Sector in America

Abstract

Although the first US business corporations were in part chartered in order to perform some public service or services, that requirement was soon jettisoned as specialized non-profit corporations proved themselves the superior organizational form for the private provision of public services. For- and non-profit corporations fulfilled their respective goals so well, in fact, that governments came to see them as rivals to state power and hence moved to regulate them in sundry ways, including by reimposing CSR requirements on for-profits.
