Abstract

This chapter argues that the estate can be seen as a series of socio-economic and political processes which are underpinned by a range of decision-making processes. It argues that while single estate studies are not new and in general all have explored to some degree the way in which the landed estate worked, the historiography has, however, placed less emphasis on where the money was made and more on how it has been spent. This study has sought to redress this balance and to explore the landed estate in a broader financial sense.
