Abstract

This chapter presents travel statistics, but of enslaved persons. Analogous to—but much different from—the voluntary oceanic travel of free people, enslaved persons were forcibly transported from Africa across the Atlantic to the United States (termed “slave imports”), by U.S. ships and by foreign ships. Disembarked slaves transported by U.S. ships and delivered elsewhere than to the United States are called “carrying trade,” with two components: Africa to the non-U.S. Americas and from one Caribbean place to another.
