Congruence and Convergence: Contemporary Islamic Finance and Social Responsibility

In: A Socially Responsible Islamic Finance

Abstract

After briefly introducing Islamic law and commerce, this chapter overviews an Islamic stakeholder theory, identifying stakeholders relevant to business and finance, their respective rights, and whether and to what extent the Shari’ah encourages intergenerational ethical responsibility. A religious and ethical groundwork is thus established for Islamic and Muslim businesses and economies to demonstrate concern for social and economic justice and care for natural and built environments and values shared with contemporary responsible markets. This chapter and the subsequent one detail various points of congruence and even convergence between these two worlds, offering instruction to both and providing perspectives that many have yet to consider.
