Abstract

This book, Joan Robinson in Princely India, is about her early activities and work in the field she had chosen during her undergraduate days at Cambridge, that is, economics. After completing the Economics Tripos from Girton College in 1925, she got married to Austin Robinson, her teacher who held a temporary faculty assignment. In 1926, the couple left for India. The colonial India was divided into British India and Princely India. While British India was directly ruled by the British Crown, Princely India consisted of a large number of quasi-autonomous states ruled by local princes. One of the relatively larger princely states, Gwalior, was looking for a tutor for its minor prince. Joan Robinson’s aristocratic background came in handy in getting her husband appointed to this position.
