Abstract

There is a growing volume of literature investigating efficiency in the banking industry. In particular, most of the research focuses on the European and US banking sectors. This chapter will comprehensively review the literature investigating efficiency in the banking industry, and it will be structured as: cross-country studies, single country studies and efficiency studies focusing on the Chinese banking industry. Due to the financial crisis during the period 2007–2009, great attention has been paid to the risk-taking behaviour of the banking industry by the government as well as by banking regulatory authorities. In particular, there is a growing number of studies investigating risk in the banking industry, thus, the second part of this chapter will focus on reviewing relevant studies in examining risk in the banking industry. In particular, most of the literature regarding risk-taking behaviour mainly links the risk with bank competition and risk with bank profitability. The third part of this chapter will mainly focus on reviewing relevant literature on the relationship between efficiency and risk in the banking industry. Finally, the summary and conclusion will be provided.
