Abstract

The Chinese banking sector, the sector linked to the lives of everybody in the society, plays a vital role in promoting economic growth in China. In addition, the Chinese government and banking regulatory authorities make consistent efforts to create a sustainable, healthy and well-performing banking sector. Great attention has been paid to issues in the Chinese banking industry by a growing number of academic researchers. The three most important aspects in Chinese banking industry are to improve performance, to increase competitive condition and to reduce the risk-taking behaviour of Chinese commercial banks. This book comprehensively and systematically examines the risk conditions and efficiencies in the Chinese banking industry. In particular, this book evaluates the inter-relationships between risk and efficiency, and the inter-relationships between different types of risk. This chapter will give an overall introduction to the book, focusing on its aims and objectives, methodology and data as well as its structure.
