Abstract

A decade or so after the financial crisis hit Asia in 1997–98, the region once again experienced a severe capital account shock in 2008–09. How different was this boom and bust cycle of international capital flows from the previous one? This chapter examines the balance of payments dynamics in emerging Asia2 to understand the magnitude and types of private capital flows to and from the region between 1990 and 2008.
