Abstract

The preceding chapters have traced the numerous massive changes undergone by the British insurance industry that have reflected the social, political and economic upheavals that occurred in Britain from the beginning of the twentieth century until the onset of the 2008 financial crisis. In 1900 the non-life insurance industry was still largely concentrated on marine and fire insurance. Liability and motor insurances were still new forms of business destined to become major sources of business. The main changes to the industry during the twentieth century can be summarised as follows, with almost every aspect of the insurance market undergoing far-reaching changes, notably:
