Abstract

Why a book on the Spanish Flu? Pandemics are deadly diseases that happen simultaneously in several countries and affect a substantial fraction of the population. The Spanish Flu, with a global death toll ranging from 50 to 100 million, was one of the deadliest pandemics in history. Moreover, the substantial economic crisis generated by the Spanish Flu also deserves careful examination. Lastly, the outburst of the Covid-19 has increased the interest in the Spanish Flu, which is the closest pandemic in terms of timing, spread, and global death toll. This book provides a comprehensive and unified overview of the economic effects of the 1918 influenza, with special emphasis on the Spanish economy, from which we hand-collected new data. It also explains why its consequences may be different from other pandemics like the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and the Black Death.
