Abstract

Following the rise of business ethics in the West since the 1970s, during the last few decades in China a greater number of scholars have focused their attention on business ethics in this country. If the rise of business ethics in Western countries had been linked to crises in corporate ethics, public trust, and corporate well-being instigated by the exposure of a series of scandals in the corporate world, the rise in business ethics in contemporary China was rooted in the emergence of critical ethical issues during the transformation of the country’s economic system (Lu 1999). Although China’s sociopolitical, economic, and cultural background is radically different from those of Western countries, many of the issues regarding business ethics that emerge are related to the market economy. Therefore, in analyzing the emergence of such issues in contemporary China, it is important to first understand the relationship between the market and ethics.
