  • Alan Ebenstein

Abstract

After Hayek suffered his period of depression from 1969 through the first half of 1974, he regained strength and completed Law, Legislation and Liberty during the middle 1970s. As he did so, he began to look at the world in a new way. He wrote in the preface to the third volume that he “found it necessary” to add an epilogue that expressed “more directly the general view of moral and political evolution which has guided me in the whole enterprise.” This epilogue was “The Three sources of Human Values.” He was reluctant to publish what he thought would be his final systematic work without indicating in what direction his ideas were heading. over the long period that had transpired since he discontinued work on the manuscript in 1969, his ideas “developed further.”
