Abstract

The changes in the marketplace in the 1990s, brought about by the twin forces of globalisation and the end of the era of cold war, are even more profound compared to the re-emergence of new market forces after World War II. This book is concerned with issues which are influencing the conduct of scientific research both in universities and in industry, as they have a major influence on the current developments in the marketplaces around the world. The rapidly growing importance of knowledge as the new currency for economic and social development has pushed science much more into the public domain and, as a consequence, has generated unprecedented demands for accountability and overall social relevance. The practice of curiosity-driven, blue-sky scientific enquiry, emanating from fundamental human curiosity, is now being required to be better balanced by the needs of wealth creation, employment generation, social justice and the care of the environment in which we live.
