Abstract

The Republic of Ireland has been characterised as a dependently industrialising peripheral economy.2 The same is true of Northern Ireland, despite the province’s legacy of traditional industries and the strong political and financial support for industrial development extended by the British government. For potential investors it is true that Ireland has attractions as a point of entry into European markets, particularly to non-EU firms,3 although the small size of the two economies, lack of locally available inputs and higher transportation costs are all disincentives. Nevertheless, as export platforms within the EU, both the Republic and Northern Ireland seem well suited to the type of investment which Japanese manufacturing firms have been making in other developed economies.
