Where Now?

Abstract

The Third World has changed dramatically in the last ten years. The shift to sound economic policies has transformed much of Asia and Latin America and set a number of countries on a track of fast growth. The axiom that economic growth in the less industrialised parts of the world was dependent on growth in the advanced countries had finally to be discarded when, in 1991–92, with the industrialised world in deep recession, there was vigorous autonomous growth in China and south-east Asia and parts of Latin America. Half way through the 1990s it is clear that a number of countries in these areas, as well as others such as India and Pakistan, are potentially on the verge of a period of high growth.
