Disarmament for Development in Favour of the Developing Countries

Abstract

Analysis of the economic advantages of disarmament has been reduced to the dictum ‘guns or butter’. The majority of economists have determined military expenditure to be unproductive, a burden to be minimized to the greatest extent commensurate with security constraints. Ceteris paribus, a decision to disarm has been seen as being good for the improvement of economic growth. The present disarmament process is highly exceptional. In a situation of economic crisis, discontent grows. It becomes more difficult to run a heavily militarized economy. In this context, there are three different interpretations of disarmament.
